Diagram day! Today: The Iceberg of Ignorance. In 1989 Sidney Yoshida ran a famous study about the way problems are shared and understood within organisations. He found that Executives are typically shielded from 96% of all problems that occur in traditional, hierarchical organisations... 😳 Implications for Leaders: We don't need to get rid of hierarchy but how can leaders listen to the organisation so you really see the challenges and are not shielded from them? How can leaders create safety for issues to be brought up without fear? Definitely an issue I have seen in 🇩🇪 and 🇺🇸 businesses - maybe a little less in 🇬🇧... Would you agree? Leadership means mastering succession, too. Absolute masterclass by Jürgen Klopp: in this short clip he announces the incoming Head Coach for Liverpool Football Club Arne Slot with his very own football chant. Why is this so good? He is taking initiative to even think about doing this. He is leading the choir - quite literally. He is creating warmth for Arne. Klopp is aware of the needs of those around him. Notice how little this is about him and how much this is about Arne and building connection with the fans. Would you have done the same? Diagram day! Today: the Pareto Principle (also known as the 80/20 rule) The Pareto Principle states that for many outcomes, roughly 80% of consequences come from 20% of the efforts put in. Examples: 20% of the hazards account for 80% of injuries... 20% of patients incur 80% of healthcare expenses... And crucially: 20% of the time you spend prospecting leads to 80% of revenue generated...! So do the homework around what those 20% are and focus on these activities. A day early but here goes: Happy Mothers Day! With a special shout out to the (often) mothers and (sometimes) dads who keep families and relationships going by being brilliant: - communicators 📣 - WhatsAppers 📱 - letter writers 📝 - telephonists ☎️ - listeners 👂🏼 - texters 💬 Without communication, human relationships simply die. So thank you!

This week I spoke to a CEO about creating more trust in their team. They looked at with that thousand yard stare and said: "I wish I had that problem... My team has stopped caring." 😱 😳 Which prompted me to write this little poll about first-order challenges. Let me know. If you don't look after a team, think about the org you are in and chose a relevant option. Thank you!

“Getting old means learning how to lose.” This week mum came from the eye doctor with tricky news: her eye sight is deteriorating - invasive treatments necessary. She had expected it but was still down... Spend a few evenings by herself - finding ways to cope. Invariably in situations like these she will quote the beginning of a favourite text of hers: “Alt werden heißt verlieren lernen.” Or send it to me via WhatsApp. It’s very true for her: most weeks bring with them some sort of loss. Physically. Mentally. Emotionally. But she processes it. Shares it. And then gets up to face getting older yet. Ready to lose even more. - - - - Most days I write about #leadership and #MentalHealth. Diagram day! Today: a matrix that helps surface key insights when undergoing CHANGE VERTICAL axis: What are you leaving behind? vs. What are you moving towards? HORIZONTAL axis: What of these are you happy vs. unhappy about? The matrix then gives you ENABLERS for the change (bad things left behind and good things in the future) as well as BARRIERS for the change (good things left behind and bad things coming up). Super useful as an introspective exercise for leaders or for engaging your team.
